Visual acuity can be tested by measuring the evoked potentials produced by displaying subjects visual gratings of different contrasts. This painting is utilizes grating of high contrast and arc of visual angle (1 cm lines, arc depending on the viewing distance) in order to maximize the primary visual cortex activation when viewed by a human subject. Horizontal and vertical lines are mixed to produce a type of pattern reversal.
